KSHSAA Sanctioning Policy -- “Approved Events”

Bylaw XIV requires sanctioning of all activities under the jurisdiction of the KSHSAA which includes Athletics, Music, Debate, Speech, Spirit Groups & Scholars Bowl. KSHSAA member schools shall not participate in interstate interscholastic activities under the jurisdiction of the KSHSAA involving 4 or more schools and 2 or more states (including Kansas) unless such events have been approved by KSHSAA and the out-of-state high school’s association(s). Exception: Dual and Triangular events do not require sanctioning unless 3 states are involved.

Kansas member schools wishing to sponsor these types of interstate interscholastic events must complete “Form G-1” pages 3 and 4 (found behind school log-in under administrator’s password, entry forms, year round-letter forms) at least 30 days prior to the date of the activity and fax or mail to the KSHSAA. On page 3 of Form G-1, Section 1 must be completed and signed by a school administrator and on page 4, list all schools invited to attend (including city and state). If the list is long a computer listing may be submitted in place of page 4.

Member schools wishing to attend these types of interstate interscholastic events sponsored in another state must contact the sponsor to verify a sanction form has been filed with their state association, who in turn will contact the KSHSAA for approval. All applications must be initiated by the sponsor of the event to their state high school association.

The sanctioning process is to assure only bona fide member schools are involved in interscholastic activities. Bylaw-Article I-Sec. 4 states, “each school in joining the Association expressly agrees not to contest with schools which are non-members of this Association or of the state associations of the states in which they are located.”

Administrators, coaches, and directors should always check the “approved events” link on the front page of the KSHSAA web site before scheduling or attending any interstate event.
