Mixed Team Volleyball Policy

The KSHSAA receives numerous inquiries regarding boys’ participating on girls’ volleyball teams.

HS Varsity -The NFHS volleyball rules require that when boys’ play on a HS varsity team, the height of the net must be raised to 7’11 5/8” (7 ½” higher than the girls height). KSHSAA Rules 23 and 43 do not allow boys to participate in regional, sub-state and state tournaments.

HS sub-varsity level; MS/Junior High- The net height may remain at 7’4 ¼”. Schools receiving requests for boys to participate on the girl’s team must refer to the language of their match contracts. If a contract expressly states “girl’s volleyball contest”, boys may not participate.

The KSHSAA recommends that schools communicate prior to matches regarding boy’s participating on a school team. Possible modifications might be: limit boys playing position to a back row player only; no not allow boys to hit (spike/attack) the ball), etc.

NOTE: Please remember that when volleyball was offered for the girls it was because they were limited in athletic participation opportunities. If allowing boys to play on a girl’s team, please consider safety of all players /opponents and the girls that might be displaced/lose playing time.
