WHAT IS THE LIBERO PLAYER?
- Considered a defensive specialist; libero is a back row player
- Use of the libero is a coaching strategy and its use is optional
- A team may designate only 1 libero per game (must be on roster and
starting line-up)
- A team may designate a different libero for subsequent games.
THE LIBERO MAY …
- May serve as team captain
- May serve in one rotation
- May replace any player on the back row
- May be used as an exceptional sub (when doing so must wear team uniform
top; team has no libero player
- for remainder of game
- May be replaced by teammate (if injured) at coaches discretion (not
immediately). If replaced, may not re-enter game.
THE LIBERO MAY NOT …
- May not block or attempt to block
- May not set the ball using an overhead finger pass while on or in
front of the attack line extended for an
- attack above the height of the net
- May not complete an attack (on/off court) if, at contact, ball is
entirely above height of net
- May not replace a disqualified player
LIBERO UNIFORM
- Shorts = Same/identical to teammates
- Jersey/Top = Must be contrasting color to those
worn by teammates (primary color must be different than any
- color that is +25% on teammates)
- May be a different style (t-shirt acceptable)
- Must have a legal number (may not be a duplicate number)
- Libero playing as regular player must have a second (team) uniform – same
number preferred
- Libero may have 2 different numbers
(both must be entered on the team roster - example: 15 (L10).
LT (LIBERO TRACKER)
- Not scorekeeper; Will sit next to scorekeeper; Record starting line
up on tracking sheet & all subs during game
- Tracker could be clock/timer operator
- Home team responsible to provide LT (if home team does not use libero,
visitor provide) – prior communication
- between schools encouraged.
- Notify umpire if no libero identified on line-up
- LT MUST: 1. Make sure 1 rally before libero replacement;
libero must be replaced by same player libero replaced.
- Coaches encouraged to work with school administrators to secure and
train a libero tracker (adult or student)
- Schools hosting quads may ask one of 3 visiting schools to provide
the second tracker.
- NO LIBERO TRACKER, NO LIBERO!
