TRACK AND FIELD ANNOUNCEMENTS

Again this year during the course of the 2010 track and field season the KSHSAA will be posting weekly updates/announcements/interpretations. Check this site for those items - your question may be answered by checking this source for information.

ERROR IN 2010 KSHSAA TRACK AND FIELD MANUAL – page 26 – STATE MEET SCHEDULE:  I apologize that this first announcement is to correct an error that was not discovered until after the 2010 manual was printed and mailed to the member schools.  The error is in regards to the RUNNING EVENT SCHEDULE for the State meet for FRIDAY.  The preliminary schedule for Friday AM and PM are just reversed – Classes 4A – 5A – 6A will be conducted on FRIDAY MORNINGClasses 1A – 2A – 3A preliminaries will be held FRIDAY AFTERNOONThe Friday schedule for the finals in the 3200 M runs are correct – classes 4A – 5A – 6A will begin at 7:45 am and the classes 1A – 2A – 3A will begin at 6:30 pm.  Posted on the KSHSAA track and field page is a link to the 2010 State Site information.  Contained on that page is the correct 2010 schedule for the state meet.
REGIONAL ASSIGNMENTS – As of this date we have confirmed host site locations for most of the 2010 Regional meets.  We are still in the process of contacting schools in an effort to finalize a couple of host sites.  Once we have all of the host sites for a class identified and have time information from those sites, we will be posting the assignments for that class on the KSHSAA track and field page – click on the box “2010 REGIONAL ASSIGNMENTS AND INFORMATION” to find out the regional assignments for schools.
PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE POST-SEASON – While it is readily understood by coaches that the first part of any athletic season is focused on getting the kids physically ready for the key meets that will be taking place in the end of the season, as coaches we sometimes neglect (especially in track and field) that we need to make sure kids establish habits that will not create issues for them at these end of the season meets.  Two of the areas that I encourage coaches to place renewed focus on this year is SPORTSMANSHIP and UNIFORMS.
Sportsmanship - while the challenges with student/athlete behavior in track and field are not nearly as common or “explosive” as they are in some other athletic activities, there are from time to time challenges with a student’s behavior/language at track and field meets.  When a coach observes a student’s actions as not consistent with good sportsmanship, the coach needs to correct that student’s actions.  That is part of the responsibilities one assumes when they take the role of and assume the duties of a “COACH”.
Uniforms – Students are to be wearing legal uniforms all season long – not just during the regional and state meets.  By stressing to competitors what is legal and illegal for them to wear and compete in all season long, we can avoid those very difficult situations that almost always arise during the regional and state meets!  Review the rules and share the information contained in the “LEGAL UNIFORMS” document with students (and the rest of your coaching staff).  Don’t put your kids in the difficult situation of being disqualified at ANY meet because as a coach, you failed to properly inform them of what they can wear or what is legal/illegal in regards to uniforms!

Electronic devices and pictures – On a related note, I heard one of our really accomplished coaches make the following comment at one of the rules meetings I attended – “One of the things I’m going to cover and stress when I meet with parents is to talk to them about cameras/video’s.”  The point he was making is that coaches sometimes forget that parents/grandparents don’t always get information about what they can and cannot do at meets.  It is indeed a very unfortunate situation if a parent or grandparent of one of the athletes asked the student competing in an event to check the video camera the grandparent was using to take video of the athlete’s last throws – just to make sure they were operating the camera correctly!  By looking at the video or pictures, the athlete has violated an NFHS rule and must be disqualified.  We don’t want parents/grandparents to put their children in such situations!
