When schools affiliate with the Department of Student Activities (DSA), they sign up at least three activity advisers who receive services such as Leadership magazine and monographs on topics of interest to those in activities. These advisers also become members of the National Association of Student Activity Advisers, which entitles them to an adviser newsletter and registration discounts at NASAA Workshops. During the summer, DSA sponsors eight leadership camps for middle level and high school students, as well as middle level advisers. These five-day camps, offered in Maine, Nevada, South Dakota, New York, Tennessee, Florida, and Colorado, teach basic leadership skills.

In addition, DSA administers programs for these organizations:

  • National Association of Student Councils (NASC). Has a summer meeting each year that includes leadership training. Held in a different state each year. E-mail: nasc@principals.org.
  • National Honor Society/National Junior Honor Society. Has an annual conference each year to enhance the strength and involvement of individual chapters. E-mail: NHS@principals.org.
  • Middle Level Student Activities Association (MLSAA) is a new organization dedicated to providing programs, services, and resources for those involved with co-curricular student activities programs in middle level schools or schools containing middle level grades (5-9). MLSAA provides age appropriate leadership training programs and materials for students and assists teachers and administrators in their roles with student activities.
