IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2011-2012

DATE FOR STATE GYMNASTICS MEET CHANGED

The KSHSAA Board of Director approved a recommendation from the Sunflower League to shorten the Gymnastics season 2 weeks, due to the elimination of the regional tournaments. The new date for the 2011 KSHSAA State Gymnastics Meet will be Saturday, October 22, 2011. The meet will be hosted by Shawnee Mission-Northwest HS and begin at 12 noon. Richard Grinage will serve as the meet director.

MAT REQUIREMENT FOR 2012-2013

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the NFHS will require an adjustment to the matting in the landing area of the vault and balance beam. Following are the specific rules & mat specifications:

  • NFHS Rule 6-1-3: Specifies that the landing area on vault shall be a minimum of 18 feet by 8 feet (currently 18 x 6).
  • NFHS Rule 8-1-3: Specifies that the landing area on the balance beam shall be a minimum of 12 feet by 8 feet (currently 12 x 6).

The NFHS rules committee is very sensitive to adopting any rule that has a cost associated. The new matting requirements were put in strictly for purposes of risk minimization.

QUESTIONS/ANSWERS

1. Can multiple mats be used to meet the required landing area of 18 x 8 (vault) & 2 @ 12 x 8 (beam)?
Schools can use multiple mats to meet the length requirement of 18 feet. This is no different than what they have been doing. In regard to meeting the width requirement, this must be a single mat.

2. Since the top landing mat must be secured to prevent slippage, does that mean it must be 1 piece/mat?
No. It can be secured in many ways, some at no cost. If using Velcro, there could be a cost to have mats with Velcro.

3. What is the price of a 8 x 18 mat? An 8 x 12 mat?
The prices vary and since schools don’t need to have a single 18 feet mat you could use existing mats or when purchasing, go with 8 x 12. Cost will range $800+ to $1200. The longer mats go up in price considerably. Schools should look around on the web as there are several brands of mats that are legal and varying in price. Schools can also look at how they schedule the events as they can move mats around so it is not necessary to have all of the events going on at the same time. Some schools may already do this but it does help being able to share mats based on event requirements.

4. Since the top mat shall not be any wider than any mat underneath, would this not require an additional mat of equal size below or is there an exception to this?
Many of the landing mats are being manufactured with the base mat already attached. There is no exception to the rule for risk minimization purposes.

It should also be noted that the requirement under the beam also allows for the use of multiple mats. Two feet wide mats are available and can be used to fill in between two 8’ mats.
