Music Manual Changes for 2008-09

Large Group Rubric Adjudicator Ballots Have Been Modified for 2010

In spring 2007 we began using outcomes based adjudicator ballots for state Large Group Music Contests.  These ballots were designed by KMEA and adopted by the Executive board in June 2006.  They are available for purchase (see page 22 of music manual for order form) or you may download them by going to our music web page.  Directors are strongly encouraged to use these forms with their students throughout the year, as part of their classroom instruction.

For 2010, the KMEA music advisory committee has made a couple of modifications to these forms. The title “Rhythm” has been changed to “Rhythmic Accuracy” and now has a point range from 1 to 7 vs. 1 to 5. Also, under the “Other” category the point range is now from 0 to 3 vs. 1 to 5. These adjustments were made based on the membership comments on evaluation forms and as a result of the research and validity study which was conducted by Marvin Latimer.

NEW Music Festival Entry Procedure for 2010

Please note that effective this Spring we will be using new software to enter and schedule all Regional and State Music Festivals. (This includes piano). Schools will no longer fax or mail entry forms for music. All entries will be made directly online.

Please watch for instructions coming in January or February to guide you through the new procedure. KSHSAA will be demonstrating this new entry procedure at the February 2010 KMEA In-Service Workshop in Wichita. All entry deadlines previously published will remain the same.

Music Manual Clarifications for 2009-10

INSTRUMENTAL:

Instrumental Solo – If a student enters a second instrumental solo, the student must play music by a different composer. (Each student shall be limited to one performance time on the same instrument).

Percussion groups comprised primarily of novelty instruments are not to participate at regional and state festivals.  (Schools bringing such groups to festival will receive comments only.)

Show Tunes – Students performing show tunes and/or Jazz literature will receive “Comments Only”. The only exception is Jazz ensemble literature specifically written for a like group of instruments is acceptable, otherwise no Jazz literature.

VOCAL:

Transposed music is acceptable as long as an original copy is provided to adjudicator and there is an original copy beside the accompanist.

Show Tunes – Students performing show tunes and/or Jazz literature will receive “Comments Only”.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

KMEA has requested the following statement be adhered to by adjudicators in evaluating regional and state music festival performances:

  1. Rate the performance on its merits, not on potential.

  1. In Kansas ’ evaluation system, a III rating is considered an average performance showing accomplishment and marked promise. This rating could be used as a starting point in your evaluation.

  1. Justify your ratings with comments regardless of the rating assigned.

  1. Take time to review the justification paragraph and the ratings sheet. Please refer to the information sent to you by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
